Title: Dunki |Director: Rajkumar Hirani | Producer: Jyoti Deshpande, Gauri Khan, Rajkumar Hirani | Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani | Genre: Comedy-drama, Adventure | Rating: |
Rajkumar Hirani’s long-awaited collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, “Dunki,” finally touched down in theaters on December 21st, 2023. The film, touted as a heartwarming comedy-drama about illegal immigration, promised tears, laughter, and a journey across borders both geographical and emotional. However, while “Dunki” takes off with humor and charm, its landing proves to be less than graceful.
The story follows four friends from a small Punjabi village, each harboring dreams of a better life beyond their limited prospects. Led by the ever-optimistic Dunki (Shah Rukh Khan), they embark on a perilous yet hilarious odyssey in search of foreign soil. Hirani’s signature style of slapstick humor is on full display in the first half, drawing chuckles and guffaws as the friends navigate absurd situations and cultural clashes. Shah Rukh Khan is in his element, effortlessly slipping into the role of the lovable rogue with a twinkle in his eye and a twinkle in his toes.
However, as the film progresses, the humor takes a backseat to the harsh realities of displacement and yearning. The narrative delves into the emotional toll of separation, the desperation of seeking opportunity, and the bittersweet longing for home. While these themes resonate deeply, the execution occasionally feels heavy-handed, with melodramatic twists and underdeveloped emotional arcs for some characters.
The second half becomes uneven, with pacing issues and drawn-out sequences testing the audience’s patience. The climax, though predictable, delivers a punch of tear-jerking sentimentality, but it struggles to fully land given the preceding narrative flaws.
Technically, “Dunki” is a polished production. The cinematography captures the stunning landscapes of various countries, and the music blends catchy tunes with poignant melodies. The supporting cast, including Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and Boman Irani, lend able performances, although their characters could have benefited from more depth.

Ultimately, “Dunki” is a film of contrasts. It offers moments of genuine laughter and heart-wrenching emotion, but struggles to maintain a consistent tone and suffers from occasional narrative stumbles. While the message of hope and resilience shines through, the execution leaves something to be desired. For fans of Hirani and Khan, “Dunki” provides a familiar comfort zone with bursts of brilliance, but for some viewers, the emotional highs may not compensate for the bumpy landing.
Verdict: 3 stars out of 5. A charming tale with emotional heft, but ultimately hampered by uneven pacing and a predictable climax. Worth a watch for Shah Rukh Khan’s performance and glimpses of Hirani’s magic, but temper your expectations for a cinematic masterpiece.
