Hyderabad, India – Anumula Revanth Reddy, the Telangana Congress chief who led the party to a decisive victory in the November 30 Assembly elections, has been chosen as the next Chief Minister of the state. The decision was announced by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday.
Reddy, 54, is a former TDP leader who joined the Congress in 2021. He is a seasoned politician with a strong track record of activism and street fighting. He is also a charismatic and popular leader who is credited with reviving the Congress party in Telangana.
Reddy’s selection as Chief Minister was met with some resistance from within the Congress party. A section of state Congress veterans, including former state Congress chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy and former CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka, opposed the choice of Reddy, pointing to pending corruption cases against him and the Congress’s poor performance in his Lok Sabha constituency.
However, Reddy has the support of a majority of Congress MLAs, and the Congress high command has decided to back him despite the opposition within the party. Reddy is expected to be sworn in as Chief Minister later this week.
