The world mourns the loss of Ratan Tata, the revered former chairman of the Tata Group, whose life was defined by extraordinary contributions to society, particularly in Assam. His passing marks the end of an era for many who benefited from his philanthropy, vision and unwavering belief in India’s growth story. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, encapsulated the sentiments of many when he described Tata as a “beacon of compassion” and a figure of statesmanship whose legacy will forever be intertwined with the state.
A visionary leader and philanthropist
Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, and took the reins of the Tata Group as Director in 1981, becoming Chairman in 1991. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded its horizons, emphasising not only economic growth but also social responsibility. His belief in giving back to society was evident in numerous philanthropic initiatives that touched many lives across India.
Tata’s commitment to Assam was particularly noteworthy. He was awarded the state’s highest civilian honour, the “Assam Baibhav,” in February 2022, recognising his remarkable efforts in transforming the state’s economic landscape and improving the quality of life for its residents. For the people of Assam, Tata’s vision for sustainable growth and development in the region was always admirable.
Transforming healthcare in Assam
One of Ratan Tata’s most significant contributions to Assam is in healthcare, particularly in cancer care. In partnership with the Assam government, the Tata Group established the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, inaugurating seven state-of-the-art cancer hospitals. This initiative aims to provide advanced treatment options for cancer patients, addressing a critical healthcare gap in a region where cancer rates have surged in recent years.
During the inauguration on April 28, 2022, which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tata expressed his heartfelt commitment to improving healthcare in Assam, stating, “I want to spend my last years helping to make Assam a state that is recognised by all.” His dedication to health and wellness resonated deeply with the people of Assam, showcasing his genuine concern for their well-being.
Economic empowerment through a semiconductor facility
In addition to healthcare, Tata’s legacy in Assam includes significant investments in technology. The establishment of a Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor manufacturing facility in Jagiroad stands as a landmark achievement. In February this year, the Tata Group announced that the Government of India approved a proposal by Tata Electronics to build a state-of-the-art, greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad. This Rs27,000-crore facility is expected to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
Tata remarked on X that “the Tata group will make Assam a major player in sophisticated semiconductors.”

The facility’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi, reflecting the collaborative effort between the Tata Group and the Assam government. Chief Minister Sarma emphasised the transformative potential of this project, stating that it would place Assam on the global map and empower local youth through skill development programs, including courses in artificial intelligence and electronics.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude on X, thanking Ratan Tata for his insights and investment: “Thank you so much, Shri @RNTata2000 ji, for your valuable insights, gracious hospitality, and above all, your confidence in a #ViksitAssam.”
Promoting education and community development
Tata’s commitment to Assam extended to education and community development through the establishment of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Guwahati campus. The Government of Assam invited TISS to set up a campus in 2008, recognising the need for quality education that addresses the region’s unique challenges.
The Guwahati campus has been instrumental in contributing to the development sector in Northeast India by offering well-conceived programmes focussed on community organisation and development practices. The foundation stone for the campus was laid in 2010 in the presence of Ratan Tata, symbolising his dedication to education and social upliftment in Assam.
A personal connection to Assam
Chief Minister Sarma shared that Tata’s passing is a personal loss, with every interaction imparting wisdom and inspiration. Sarma noted, “His simplicity and humility are something I will never forget.” This sentiment captures the essence of Tata’s character, highlighting how he remained approachable and grounded despite his monumental achievements.
Tata’s commitment to Assam extended beyond business. He embraced the region’s cultural identity and traditions. His efforts to align development initiatives with local values have left a lasting impression ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of Assam’s rich heritage.
A lasting legacy
As Assam reflects on Tata’s immense contributions, it is evident that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. His philanthropic initiatives have not only enhanced healthcare and created job opportunities but have also fostered a spirit of hope and resilience among the people of Assam.
The void left by Tata’s passing is immense and the thoughts and prayers of the people of Assam are with his family during this difficult time. As Chief Minister Sarma poignantly remarked, “In his demise, the people of Assam have lost one of their biggest well-wishers.”
