United States President-elect Donald Trump has now nominated Pam Bondi as the next US attorney general. Bondi, a seasoned prosecutor and former Florida attorney general, is a familiar name in both legal and political circles in the US.
Her nomination follows the dramatic withdrawal of Trump’s initial pick, Matt Gaetz, whose contentious past made his confirmation unlikely.
As the spotlight now shifts to Bondi, her decades of legal experience, unwavering loyalty to Trump, and a history marked by both accomplishments and controversies have come under the spotlight.
How we got here
The road to Bondi’s nomination began with Trump’s surprising selection of Matt Gaetz, a staunch supporter known for his fiery rhetoric and polarising presence in Congress.
Gaetz, who rose to fame for his role in ousting US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and backing Trump’s legal battles, faced a wave of allegations. These included
accusations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and improper financial dealings.
Despite Gaetz’s insistence on his innocence, his nomination drew bipartisan skepticism. Senate moderates like Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, along with prominent figures like Mitch McConnell, privately opposed Gaetz’s confirmation, reported The Guardian.
Amid growing pressure and leaks of damaging details from a House Ethics Committee report, Gaetz announced his withdrawal, stating, “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle.”
I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance…

Hours later, Trump shifted gears and nominated Bondi, a move insiders describe as a calculated effort to secure support within the Senate and the broader Republican Party.
Who is Pam Bondi?
Bondi’s career is steeped in legal and political milestones. Born in Tampa, Florida, she spent 18 years as a prosecutor in Hillsborough County, handling complex cases involving violent crime.
In 2010, she made history as Florida’s first female attorney general, serving two terms from 2011 to 2019. Her tenure was marked by high-profile initiatives, such as Florida’s lawsuit against opioid manufacturers and her response to two of the nation’s most devastating mass shootings.
After the Pulse nightclub massacre in 2016, where 49 people were killed in an extremist attack, Bondi faced public criticism for her prior support of Florida’s same-sex marriage ban. CNN’s Anderson Cooper famously challenged her on-air about whether her policies conflicted with her expressions of solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community.
Two years later, Bondi took a firm stance following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 students and staff were killed. She supported legislation to raise the minimum age for firearm purchases and allocated millions of dollars to school security and mental health initiatives.
Despite these efforts, Bondi’s tenure as attorney general was not without controversy. Her decision not to join a fraud investigation into Trump University after receiving a $25,000 donation from Trump’s charitable foundation raised questions about ethics. Bondi claimed the donation was unrelated to her office’s decision, but critics and watchdogs pointed to the timing as problematic.
How Bondi became a key Trump ally
Bondi’s relationship with Trump has been both personal and professional. Her name first surfaced as a potential member of Trump’s administration in 2016, but her role became more prominent during his first impeachment trial in 2019.
As part of Trump’s legal team, Bondi defended him against allegations that he withheld military aid to Ukraine in exchange for political favours.
More recently, Bondi has been a vocal critic of the investigations into Trump’s conduct. She has labelled prosecutors, including
Special Counsel Jack Smith, as “horrible people weaponising our legal system.” Her consistent loyalty has earned her Trump’s trust, leading to her current nomination.
Bondi’s work with the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think tank, and her role as a partner at Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with deep ties to Trump’s circle, have further solidified her position within his inner circle, reported Politico.
What are some controversies surrounding Bondi
Bondi’s career has been punctuated by controversies that continue to fuel debate. The Trump University donation incident remains a focal point for her critics, as does her high-profile custody battle over a St Bernard dog separated from its owners during Hurricane Katrina.
Bondi refused to return the dog to the original family, accusing them of neglect, an allegation they denied. The case lasted 16 months and ended with Bondi returning the dog along with food and medication.
Her close ties to Trump have also drawn scrutiny. While her critics view her unwavering support as a liability, her allies argue that it demonstrates her steadfastness and loyalty, qualities Trump prizes in his appointees.
Will Bondi get approval?
Bondi’s nomination is widely seen as a pragmatic move by Trump, especially in the
wake of Gaetz’s withdrawal. Unlike Gaetz, whose lack of legal experience and mounting scandals made confirmation unlikely, Bondi brings decades of prosecutorial expertise and a history of navigating contentious political landscapes.
Her nomination has garnered support from prominent Republicans, including Lara Trump, the president-elect’s daughter-in-law and chair of the Republican National Committee. Bondi’s ability to build alliances across the GOP is expected to ease her path to confirmation.
Also Watch:
However, questions about her past decisions and her perceived partisanship could complicate the process. Democrats are likely to focus on her role in defending Trump during his impeachment trials and her criticism of the Justice Department’s handling of cases against him.
If confirmed, Bondi will inherit a Justice Department that has been at the center of investigations into Trump and his allies. Critics, however, warn that her history of controversial decisions and close ties to Trump could undermine her credibility in the role.
