Monitoring the Situation
Mr. Jaishankar assured that the government is closely monitoring the evolving situation and is in constant touch with the Bangladeshi Army, which is set to form an interim government following Ms. Hasina’s ouster. The safety of Indian nationals and minorities in Bangladesh is a top priority.
In addition to Mr. Jaishankar, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the meeting.
Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation and Arrival in India
Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amidst escalating protests demanding her exit. Following her resignation, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the military would establish an interim government and urged protesters to disperse.
Ms. Hasina arrived at Hindon Air Force base in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, 30 km from Delhi, last evening, where National Security Advisor Ajit Doval received her. Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the violence in Bangladesh with Mr. Jaishankar, which has resulted in over 300 deaths so far. There is no confirmation yet if Mr. Modi will meet with Ms. Hasina.
Future Plans and Border Security
Sources told The Credible India that Sheikh Hasina is expected to leave for London, where she may seek political asylum, though there is no confirmation on whether the UK has offered asylum to her.
India’s Border Security Force is on high alert along the 4,096 km border with Bangladesh, with field commanders ordered to take “on-ground” positions and be prepared for any eventuality.
Unrest and Protests
Sheikh Hasina had attempted to quell nationwide protests against her government, but fled the country following fresh clashes on Sunday, which resulted in nearly 100 deaths. The anti-government rallies, which began against civil service job quotas, escalated into wider calls for the 76-year-old Prime Minister to step down, marking some of the worst unrest of her 15-year rule.
